Japan GasAssociation updated their carbon neutrality plans and actions for 2050
The Japan GasAssociation (JGA) comprised of Japan’s major gasutilities presented updates to their plan to become carbon neutral in 2050. Thenew vision (documents currently only in Japanese available here) has expandedthe roles of biogas and natural gas compared to its predecessor, the"Carbon Neutral Challenge 2050", established in November 2020 (find the English Document from 2021 here).
Japan's gas industry has made its decarbonizationstrategy more flexible by incorporating biogas alongside eNG and setting atarget range of 50-90% for both technologies by 2050. The revised plan now allows a broader supplymix adding flexibility to reflect real-world challenges in scaling renewablegases.
But the cleargoal remains: a carbon-neutral gas supply and eNG at its centre. The major gasutilities in Japan committed to the mandatory target of 1% eNG of their directcity gas sales in 2030.
The Japan Gas Association's updated Gas Vision 2050 and Action Plan 2030 serve as importantcomponents of Japan's Green Growth Strategy.
